The articles in this special issue look back fifty years to a discovery that provided important insights into an explosion of another sort: the Big Bang. We show that this seminal discovery was the result of investigations into solving a practical problem (radio communications) and it has connections to a multitude of other subsequent innovations and discoveries.
Coming soon to IEEE Xplore is IEEE Access, the first open access mega journal in the growing IEEE open access publishing program. Multidisciplinary and all-electronic, this archival publication is focused on IEEE fields of interest, with an emphasis on applications-oriented articles.
In this double issue we describe the main thrust of the BG/Q supercomputer. The period from 2004 to 2012 witnessed a 36X increase in performance. The hardware and software focus continues to be on low power, high scalability, and high reliability.
